Titanic (film) trivia: James Cameron wanted Kate’s hat at the beginning of the film to be absolutely gigantic, because the hats of that time were extravagant. James and costume designer Deborah L. Scott had to find a specific hatmaker in London able to make it, and even then they ran into troubles with finding the proper materials. “We didn’t have the same type of straw used in that period and getting the brim large enough was difficult without it collapsing. Finally, after agonizing and laboring over this hat, we gave it to Kate on the day of shooting and I saw that the car door she was meant to exit from was tiny. I was thinking what if she can’t get her head out of the doorway? There was no backup plan at all! But Kate very cleverly bowed her head down, and it’s a really great shot.”
